Shell & Tube Heat Exchanger Cleaning
Understanding Shell & Tube Heat Exchangers
The shell of a shell and tube heat exchanger is a pressure vessel, which means it helps to maintain the pressure of the fluid that is traveling through it. Sometimes the shell is referred to as the "housing." Within the outward shell of the heat exchanger there are tubes that fluid flows through; hence we get the name of this cooling device.
Hot fluid is pumped into one end of the device and flows through tubes. On the outside of these tubes, cooler fluid is pumped over them. As the hot liquid flows through the tubes, the heat is transferred to the cooler fluid flowing over the tubes.
Visual Example of the Flow within a Shell & Tube Heat Exchanger
As the diagram above demonstrates, hot liquid (colored red) enters the right end of the heat exchanger. The hot fluid then flows through the tubes to the left end of the heat exchanger. Simultaneously, cool fluid enters from the top of the left of the device (colored blue); this opening is the "shell inlet." The cold fluid travels over the tubes as it moves from left to right, moving up and down around the baffles. This fluid is then discharged out of the bottom right section of the tube.
In the process of these fluid movements, heat is conveyed from the hot liquid to the cold liquid. The basic parts of this heat exchanger; the shell and the tubes; provide the name for this cooling device. It is rather straightforward to understand when you use the above diagram. Essentially, all shell and tube heat exchangers function in this fashion.
Cleaning Shell & Tube Heat Exchangers
These devices are often fairly large, and can be expensive. There are many different methods that can be employed to effectively clean these devices; some work better than others. Additionally, the types of fluids that flow through these cooling devices will determine the debris and buildup within them. Given the many possible variables; and the possibility to damage the cooling device; outsourcing the cleaning process is the best option for many businesses.
