Plate Heat Exchanger Cleaning
Understanding Plate Heat Exchangers
Plate heat exchangers were first produced in the 1920’s. They consist of relatively few parts. Because they use fluids or gases, they have inlets and outlets. The mediums that flow through a plate heat exchanger are not allowed to mix, and are separated by plates and sometimes gaskets on these plates.
Essentially, a plate heat exchanger allows hot fluid to flow through a series of channels and make contact with a plate. The device also allows cold fluid to flow through other channels and make contact with the same plate the hot liquid is in contact with. Yet, the hot and cold fluids are not allowed to mix.
The hot fluid heats up the plates it is in contact with, which in turn heats the cold fluid on the other side of the plate. This allows for heat to be passed from the hot fluid, to the plate, to the cold fluid. The cold fluid then emerges from the outlet of the plate heat exchanger hotter than it went in. Conversely, the hot fluid emerges from the device cooler than it went in.
The diagram below shows the flow of hot and cold fluids through a plate heat exchanger. Notice how a gasket in the diagram allows the liquid to flow to the channels of specific plate sides. There is one channel for hot liquid and a separate channel for cold liquid. The plates in between allow the heat to pass from the hot liquid to the cold liquid without the two fluids mixing.
Cleaning Plate Heat Exchangers
A dirty, fouled plate heat exchanger will not perform as efficiently as it should. This loss of performance can result in extra operating and energy costs. Both large and small plate heat exchangers can lose their ability to perform if they are compromised by debris or buildup.
If you have a smaller plate heat exchanger, you may be considering purchasing chemical solvent to clean it. This is often a costly mistake, as the solvent will not remove all of the contamination on the inside of the device. The solvent can also be expensive; and, of course these caustic chemicals are very dangerous to use. And, in many situations, a plate heat exchanger that has been cleaned with chemicals only may need another cleaning in the near future. The accumulating costs of time and money make this inefficient method a poor choice. It is often preferable to simply buy a new plate heat exchanger than to use a chemical solvent to remove some of the contamination.
Professional cleaning is an excellent option for both small and large plate heat exchangers. A thoroughly cleaned device can perform at optimum efficiency and not need another cleaning for many years. This greatly increases the lifespan of the device, and eliminates the need to purchase a new plate heat exchanger or constantly clean it with ineffective chemicals.
Professional cleaning services can range in efficacy depending upon how the device is cleaned. Make sure you don’t settle for a cleaning company that leaves debris and contaminant behind after their cleaning process is complete. Your plate heat exchanger needs to get totally cleaned, otherwise your problem is not solved.
